Glissa Sunseeker

"I can't kill what isn't alive, but I can cease your existence all the same" muttered Glissa as the gnome in front  of her exploded and fell to bits.  As it crumbled a twisted grin snuck across her face... "it's the small joys in life that make it worth living." she explained to other elves that had gathered in the stadium around her.  They sat in awe as she weaved mana into a destructive force of beauty and savagery.  They cheered and whooped as trinket after trinket exploded and melted, shattered and crumbled into dust around her.

"Thank you, thank you!" shouted Glissa over the raucous applause.  Even though she enjoyed this attention something was missing from the experience and she knew what it was.  There was little pleasure in the destruction of these *things* any more.  There was no feeling of accomplishment... there was no emotional gain from destroying that which cannot feel.  Without the fear of loss from the victim, there's no joy in victimizing them.  To these artifacts there is nothing different between existing or rubble.  They don't *care* that they're gone.  There is no self preservation.  Yet.  There was no exhilaration in their annihilation, and she was going to fix it.

As the crowd settled down Glissa started the speech she had been practicing for so long.  "We are all here because we loathe these accursed *things*!" yelled Glissa to the rapt audience.  "My hatred for these artifacts is shared by you all, and I feel a closeness with each of you that warms my heart.  And it is with great sadness that I tell you that this destruction you have witnessed means nothing."  At these words, the audience gasped in disbelief.  "To these pieces of rubble, their destruction is imperceptible.  Because they can't *feel* their destruction, because they don't *fear* their destruction."  The elves in the front row nodded vigorously in ascension.

"And THAT is why I bring you a special guest tonight; a fellow elf that can finally bring fear to these machines.  Elves of Balance and Harmony, I present you with Momir Vig!"

The applause from the audience was deafening as Momir slowly made his way to the center of the stage.  At his heels, four <Transmuters> rolled four tables, each of which had an identical looking artifact on it.  The crowd jeered at the stationary artifacts, hurling insults that were indistinguishable from one another over the din.  The crowd fell silent as Momir raised his hands.

"First, I wish to express my appreciation to Glissa, and to you all.  I am truly honored to be in such esteemed company.  As many of you know, I have studied creatures for a lifetime.  I have studied them so much that I am now able to give artifacts the gift of feelings.  And I believe..."

The boos of the audience quickly cut him off.  Comments of "Travesty!" and "Despicable" filled the air as elves were affronted at the notion of giving a gift like this to any lowly artifact. Glissa quickly ran to the center of the stage and motioned for the audience to be silent, which happened immediately.  "My dear elves.  You misunderstand the good elf's intentions!" she yelled, with just a hint of malevolence in her eyes.  "What we call a 'gift', these machines will soon call a curse!  For all they will feel is pain, fear, loss and anguish!"  As this concept sunk into the crowd, applause started to grow.  The same crazed look that filled Glissa was beginning to spread.  Hatred only goes so deep before it starts to flower as insanity... and once those roots grab hold it is all too easy to spread to neighboring life.  The elves in the crowd started to hunger for the painful, violent destruction of a feeling artifact; and they shrieked for Vig to continue.

"You all are now part of this grand experiment, and I am bolstered by your enthusiasm.  I know, without a doubt, without hesitation that what we're doing is right.  However, we've wasted enough time... we have attrocities to commence!"

As Momir finished speaking, nearly a dozen other artifacts were rolled out to the center stage, and one by one the four restrained artifacts were revived.  At first they appeared confused and disoriented, however, that was short lived and the expressions on their faces soon turned to panic.  They looked around the stadium in which they were restrained and saw countless elves leering at them with that hungry look of insanity bred with desire in their eyes.
And then the torture began... fellow artifacts were given life only to be slowly dismembered before the perpetually opened eyes of the four humanistic artifacts.  Dozens of elves took turns spitting on the restrained artifacts, others threw or beat them with the severed limbs of the now destroyed artifacts while yet others took turns violating the restrained artifacts with branches, twigs, bones and rocks.  All the while the restrained artifacts whimpered 'why... why...' but their cries were drowned out by the laughter and insults of the throng of torturous elves.

In the height of this debauchery, a blinding light engulfed the stage and explosions could be heard all around the stadium.  Body parts of elves were strewn violently across the terrain.  Many that were alived wailed in pain, pleading for assistance, begging either for healing or for death.  Almost the entire throng was either dead or injured.  Small fires had broken out around the stage and the elves that were still able to move hobbled in panic to extinguish the flames.

Everyone thought that the prisoners were destroyed with the blasts.  Everyone except for Glissa.  She *knew* that they were still alive and had escaped. She knew this, because she had planned this.  The elves that died here tonight were a tragedy, but if they only knew what they were going to help accomplish then they should be honored to die as martyrs.  As Glissa shrank into the shadows of the carnage the voice in her mind laughed maniacally as she muttered: "My creations are loose... now I just have to guide them.  I can't wait to tell him how it went..."  Glissa walked slowly away from the crumbling stadium, protected by her armor.  She knew where the robots were going, and she had plenty of time to get there.
